Practical Experiences in Trading Off Ontology Usability and Reusability

چکیده
This paper describes the practical application of ontologies in designing knowledge-based systems. We built a common ontology to allow knowledge sharing among several applications in the domain of air campaign planning. In trying to reuse this shared ontology, we confirmed previous findings in the knowledge acquisition literature: it is difficult to simultaneously obtain high usability (i.e., adequacy for a specific use) and reusability (i.e., adequacy for several uses). In this article, we discuss some of the reasons for this trade-off, and present some lessons learned about the limitations of current tools for ontology construction in practical applications.

Assessment of the Reusability of Ontologies: A Practical Example
Ontologies provide a common conceptualization of the world to be shared across systems. Their reusability is assumed to be one of the main advantages of their application in the development of knowledge systems. Thus, libraries of reusable ontologies have already been built and made avai!able. This paper reports an attempt to reuse one ontology available for public use, and the practical develo...
متن کاملAn Extension of an Environment for Building/using Ontologies "hozo" toward Practical Ontology Engineering
Through the spread of ontological engineering, many technologies and software tool for ontology construction were developed. By using them, many ontologies have been constructed in various domains. On these backgrounds, we have been developing an ontology engineering environment “Hozo” and using the tool to construct a lot of ontologies in various domains such as medical science, bioinformatics...
متن کاملOntology Engineering - The DOGMA Approach
This chapter presents a methodological framework for ontology engineering (called DOGMA), which is aimed to guide ontology builders towards building ontologies that are both highly reusable and usable, easier to build and to maintain. We survey the main foundational challenges in ontology engineering and analyse to what extent one can build an ontology independently of application requirements ...
متن کاملUsing and improving bio-ontologies stored in relational databases∗
Current persistent storage implementations of large bioontologies fall short in meeting usability and reusability requirements. Main limitations are demonstrated with two representative ontologies-stored-in-databases: the Gene Ontology and the Foundational Model of Anatomy. We discuss and propose several improvements for ontology development. Advantages of a better implementation are illustrate...
متن کاملGranular information retrieval from the Gene Ontology and from the Foundational Model of Anatomy with OQAFMA
Current persistent storage implementations of large bio-ontologies fall short in meeting usability and reusability requirements. Limitations are demonstrated with two representative ontologies-stored-in-databases, the Gene Ontology and the Foundational Model of Anatomy. Their un-usability for granular information retrieval is not due to a lack of knowledge modelled in the respective ontologies,...
